Marine Fuel Testing Programme (MFTP)
Our Marine Fuel Testing Programme (MFTP) in accordance with ISO 8217 specifications, specially designed for Ship Owners and Operators whose vessels receive Marine Bunker Fuel worldwide, serves as a robust precautionary measure against machinery damage in tandem with vital routine monitoring for optimal fuel management. Our standard MFTP package includes free of cost fully equipped Sampling Kits with free sample collection arrangements globally and delivery to our laboratories. Furthermore, testing and fuel analysis reports are delivered within 24 hours of receipt of the samples and follow stringent compliance with safety and environmental legislation, such as SOLAS and MARPOL respectively. Our MFTP also offers comprehensive cutting-edge testing packages for Biofuel and Alternative Fuel.
GC-MS Screening & Enhanced Analysis Packages
Over the years, the maritime industry has grappled with the persistent issue of bunker contamination. Due to the complexity of the bunker supply chain, a wide range of chemicals and materials from various sources can enter the marine fuel supply chain. Therefore, the critical need for routine pre-emptive monitoring of fuel quality remains a pressing requirement.
- GC-MS Screening Test: Our cost effective and quick turn-around Gas Chromatography - Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) Screening Testing, recommended for all Residual bunker fuel samples, qualitatively identifies and monitors 16 chemical compounds (Present/Absent) under 4 key classes, including Chlorinated Organic Compounds (COCs). Our GC-MS Screening solution acts as an ‘early detection system’ to detect any anomalies before they escalate into costly operational disruptions.
- Enhanced Analysis Packages: Our mindfully designed Enhanced Analysis packages help determine the root causes of any abnormalities detected during GC-MS Screening or otherwise with unparallelled accuracy. Package options include Quantification of Total Organic Chlorides by EN 14077, Compounds Quantification by GC-MS ASTM D7845 and GC-MS by Solid Phase Extraction technique. Depending on the investigative need, our highly qualified experts provide insights on the optimal option for truly effective intervention.
Fuel Operations Management Package (FOMP)
Since 1st January 2020, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) enforced a 0.50% global sulphur cap in marine fuels for the shipping industry to reduce sulphur oxide emissions. However, a comparison of fuels tested before 2020 and after 2020 reveals that, the latter exhibits greater instability, waxiness, lower density, and viscosity, lower calculated carbon aromaticity index (CCAI), lower vanadium content, higher net specific energy, higher pour point, and higher acid number.
The decreased stability reserve (higher paraffinic and lower aromatic content) of post-IMO 2020 fuels also raises concerns about compatibility issues when different fuels are mixed. Even post four years of using Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil (VLSFO), the long-term storage of VLSFO still remains a challenge and pain-point for the marine industry.
To help manage these challenges, our experts have designed a customized, quick turnaround ‘Fuel Operations Management Package’ (FOMP) to provide ship management and crew comprehensive guidance for optimal management of VLSFO.
Our routine cost-effective FOMP includes an extensive selection of carefully chosen tests to thoroughly monitor:
- Stability Aspects
- Waxiness
- Key characteristics to determine Long-term Storage Behavior
- Chemical Nature & Chemical Contaminant Markers
Our FOMP is specifically designed to ensure our customers have the vital insights in hand to take speedy, well-informed and preventative action.
Fuel System Check (FSC)
Catalytic fines (also known as catfines) comprise of aluminium and silicon oxides used during the refinery process to allow catalytic cracking. If not monitored, catfines can accumulate in the fuel oil system; the consequences of which can be highly detrimental to a vessel’s fuel treatment systems. By conducting our carefully designed and in-depth Fuel System Check (FSC) on vessels, we help ship owners mitigate potential risk associated to catfines build-up.
Lube Oil (LO) Check
Lube Oil (LO) Check is a key complementary service offered in our MFTP package, which includes free LO sampling kit provisions and free courier service to our laboratories. Many shipboard machinery problems may not always originate from fuel but can also come from the lubricants. Machinery problems may be caused by incorrect lubricants used or the poor quality of lubricants used. Fuels and lubricants are interrelated and have an important place in the performance of the shipboard equipment; hence, should not be tested and reported individually. We offer a wide range of options for the testing and detailed reporting of LO, designed to provide oil property tests and the spectrometric analysis of the metals using the ASTM D5185 organic dilution method for the different types of oil applications
